And oh, did I ever love this one.īe forewarned: my rambling contains spoilers for both previous books. Thing is-and I teach myself this over and over, because I can't seem to keep it in my head-neither high page counts nor tiny fonts are much of an issue when you love the book in which they feature. Sequels to bestest-books-of-all-time put a lot of pressure on a girl, you know? Especially when you factor in the tiny font and the large number of pages. I looked forward to this book for so long, and I ended up putting it off for ages upon ages because it had a high page count and a ridiculously tiny typeface 1 and I was scared I wouldn’t love it. I have a lot of thoughts on THE SUMMER QUEEN, which is a sequel to both THE SNOW QUEEN and WORLD’S END, and I’m keen to ramble about it for a while. As is so often the case these days, this is less of a proper review than a space where I think about a book out loud.

Mendoza’s own novel, Un asesino solitario, not only surpasses Pérez Reverte’s in every important aspect (readability, interest, coherence, poetics, etc.), but it also does so in about one-third the time. This is not to say, however, that there are not some really good corrido books out there. Despite the aid of culiche author Élmer Mendoza, La reina del sur has two major problems: it reads like a tired Hollywood caricature of Mexico and, as with many of Pérez Reverte’s novels, artistry is subverted by flashy but fruitless action. PSuch attempts include Spanish novelist Arturo Pérez Reverte’s La reina del sur, a never-ending novel about a narco-pilot’s girlfriend who goes into exile in Spain, revolutionizes the drug trade across the Strait of Gibraltar, and becomes the most powerful cartel leader in the world upon exacting vengeance for her lover’s death in a gun-slinging scene that would make Ang Lee or Quentin Tarantino proud. This does not, however, always translate to good narrative fiction, especially when authors attempt to transform corridos into novels or films. Corridos are by their very nature narrative forms. It was just that, at present, Georgie couldn’t think of any. There were worse places to find a husband than Newgate Prison. I'm sure they'll be the stars in future novels of the series. Ben's fellow Bow Street Runners have great senses of humor, and the camaraderie between all of them, and even with Georgie, is a treat to read. The supporting cast of characters is fun as well, with surprising depths as the story goes on. They work well together on the challenges that face them, including Georgie's cousin and the case that Ben is working on. They actually get along very well, with similar views on the world and working, and it's fun watching them get to know each other without meaning to. It's actually her idea to pay him to court her when they try to figure out a way to avoid scandal while getting out of the marriage, and it was a challenge he couldn't help but accept. Ben is ready to work for Bow Street because he's nearly penniless otherwise. Georgiana is so disillusioned by the marriage mart that she plays everything like a business venture. Of course, the set up is utterly ridiculous, but it's laid out in such a fun way it's hard to resist. This Earl of Mine is the first of the "Bow Street Bachelors" series. Against the grain of Elizabeth’s sincerely held convictions about what she thinks of Mr. Pride and Prejudice is brilliant in many ways, but its scintillating dialogue is at the heart of it. The novelist need not steer us as to what these characters’ words reveal: so confident is she in the differences between their two voices that she does not even need to use those ‘he said’, ‘she said’ clauses. Yet the husband teases the wife in ways that she does not – indeed, cannot – understand. Bennet notes that his wife’s nerves are his ‘old friends’, for he has heard her ‘mention them with consideration these twenty years at least’). Theirs is the intimacy of a long relationship (Mr. Bennet are talking to each other, and after just a couple of pages of their conversation we have an anatomy of a marriage. We all know the famous opening sentence (‘It is a truth universally acknowledged …’), and its narrator’s bone-dry irony, but most of what follows is dialogue. You can see – and hear – what is wonderful about Pride and Prejudice just by taking its first chapter. Along the way, Tarzan and his family became immortal, if only in the literary sense. Tarzan's further adventures generally have one of two plots: either Tarzan discovers a Lost World, or he defends his African friends against European villains. However, that same film also explicitly had Tarzan and Jane marry ahead of time.) (In the books, Burroughs actually did have Tarzan and Jane beget a son, Korak, and one of the silents, The Son of Tarzan, featured this character. Instead, he has often been provided with a pet chimpanzee and an adopted son - the latter because the film Tarzan never formally married Jane, and thus was not allowed by the Hays office to actually have gotten her pregnant. Most of the films omit Tarzan's English sojourn and his status as Lord Greystoke. They married and settled in England, where they had a son, but eventually grew tired of civilization and returned to the jungle. After meeting Jane and learning the basics of human interaction, he left the jungle in search of his true love. In the original books, Tarzan was the son of Lord Greystoke, raised by apes after being orphaned in Africa as a baby. Tarzan is the quintessential jungle hero white but at home in Darkest Africa. First created by Edgar Rice Burroughs in 1912, Tarzan has since swung through dozens of books, films and TV series, both straight and parodied.
